7. Quyền app xin và lý do
13. Liên hệ

TrekMesh Privacy Policy
Effective date: 2026-10-24
Summary
- TrekMesh has no servers and needs no account, phone number or email. It has no ads and no analytics of our own.
- Messages, locations, photos and files travel only over Bluetooth between phones, to people in your group or your contacts, and are encrypted so that phones relaying them cannot read them.
- Your data stays on your phone. Messages are deleted automatically after 24 hours.
- The only exception that uses the internet: Google’s QR-scanning library (ML Kit) may send technical data to Google when the phone is online (section 6).
1. Who provides TrekMesh
TrekMesh is developed and published by the TrekMesh developer (“we”). TrekMesh is open-source software under the GPL-3.0 licence, based on bitchat-android. Source code: trekmesh.app/source.
This policy covers the TrekMesh app for Android and this website.
2. What we do not do
- We run no servers for the app. We do not receive, store or have access to your messages, locations, photos, files or contacts, except what you send us by email yourself, such as a report (section 8).
- There are no accounts. The app does not ask for your phone number or email and does not read your phone’s contacts.
- No ads, and we do not sell data. We use no analytics or crash-reporting tools, except the diagnostics ML Kit sends to Google (section 6).
3. What the app handles, and why
- Display name and profile picture, which you choose (initials or an emoji are fine): so your group and your contacts can recognise you.
- A random member ID and an encryption key pair, created on your phone when you first set your name, to identify you in a group and to encrypt private messages. The secret key never leaves your phone.
- Location: only while you have an active group, the app reads your GPS location (with altitude and accuracy) and your battery level and sends them to that group, for the radar, “Find”, roll call and SOS. With no active group the app does not use GPS. Tapping “Leave group” stops sending your location to that group.
- Messages: group messages, private messages, photos, files, contact requests, delivered/read receipts for private messages, roll call, “Ring” (makes the other person’s phone ring) and SOS.
- In-app contacts: people you add by scanning their QR code or by picking them from a group.
- Your block list (section 8).
- Camera images: to scan QR codes and take photos to send in chat, processed on your phone. Photos you take are not saved to your gallery automatically.
4. Where data goes and how it is encrypted
- Data does not go over the internet: it travels by Bluetooth directly between phones. Other nearby phones running TrekMesh, including those of people outside your group, may relay it so it reaches further.
- Group data is encrypted (ChaCha20-Poly1305) with the group’s own key. That key exists only in the group’s QR code and join link (after the #, never sent to a server) and on members’ phones. Anyone with the QR code or link can join the group and see its messages and locations, so share it only with people you are travelling with.
- Private messages add a second, end-to-end layer between the two people (X25519 and ChaCha20-Poly1305). Other members may carry and relay them but cannot read them; they can tell who is messaging whom, when, and whether a message was delivered or read. You can compare the “Safety code” with the other person to make sure the key is theirs. Keys do not change over time, so if the key on a phone is exposed, previously captured messages could be read too.
- Contacts message each other over a private channel whose key only their two phones have.
- Each photo and file is encrypted with its own key, sent inside the message, so only those who can read the message can open the photo or file.
- Chat photos are resized and re-compressed on your phone, so embedded information such as where the photo was taken (EXIF) is not sent. Files are sent as they are, including any information inside them (for example, coordinates in a GPX track).
- What nearby strangers can see: so that phones can find each other, the Bluetooth layer broadcasts a technical device code (random, created at install, kept until the app’s data is cleared), a random temporary name such as “anon1234”, and public keys. Every packet, relayed or not, reveals its type, the sender’s technical device code, a group identifier and when it was sent, but not your name, the content or your location. So a stranger nearby can tell that a device code belongs to some group over a period of time.
- Notifications may show message text on your lock screen, depending on your Android notification settings.
5. Storage and retention
- Everything is kept in the app’s private storage on your phone.
- Group messages: at most the latest 200 per group, and only for 24 hours. Private messages: at most 200 per person, for 24 hours.
- Chat photos and files: stored encrypted, at most 300 items and 24 MB, oldest removed first. Profile pictures: at most 300 small images.
- Your location and other people’s are never written to storage; they are kept only while the app runs.
- Private messages your phone carries for others: in memory only, for at most 24 hours.
- Name, ID, keys, groups and members, contacts and block list: kept until you delete them or uninstall the app.
- TrekMesh data is excluded from Android cloud backup and is not copied to a new phone during device transfer.
- Messages you sent stay on the recipients’ phones under the same limits; you cannot delete the copies on other people’s phones.
- Photos and files you save outside the app (Pictures/TrekMesh or Download/TrekMesh) or open in another app are no longer managed by TrekMesh; uninstalling does not remove them.
6. Exception: Google’s QR-scanning library (ML Kit)
The app uses Google’s ML Kit library to read QR codes; recognition happens on your phone. After you use the QR scanner, if the phone is online, the library may send Google: device information (manufacturer, model, Android version), app information (package name, version), a per-installation identifier, performance metrics (such as latency), configuration and size of the processed input, event types and error codes. According to Google, this data is used for diagnostics and usage analytics, is encrypted in transit with HTTPS and is not transferred to third parties; the list Google publishes does not include image content or the content of QR codes. We do not receive this data. See ML Kit’s data disclosure and the Google Privacy Policy.
Location comes from your phone’s location services (Google Play services where available, otherwise Android’s GPS). Those services work according to your phone’s location settings and their provider’s policies.
7. Permissions and why
- Nearby devices (Bluetooth): to find, connect to and exchange data with other phones. This is what the mesh runs on.
- Precise location: radar, “Find”, roll call, SOS. On Android 11 and older, Android also requires it for Bluetooth scanning.
- Location “Allow all the time” (background): so your group still sees you when the screen is off or the phone is in your pocket. Used only while you have an active group; you can decline.
- Camera: to scan QR codes and take photos to send in chat.
- Notifications: messages, SOS, “Ring”, and the required notice for the background connection.
- Ignore battery optimisation: so SOS alerts and messages still arrive while the phone is in sleep mode.
- Run in the background and at start-up: to keep the mesh connection while the screen is off and restore it after the phone restarts.
- The app does not ask for access to all your photos, files, the microphone or your contacts: photos are picked with Android’s photo picker and files with the system file picker, and the app receives only what you pick.
- The app declares the Internet permission (inherited from the original source code). TrekMesh’s own features do not use the internet; only the ML Kit library in section 6 does.
8. Blocking and reporting people
- Your block list (member ID and their name at the time) is stored only on your phone and is never sent anywhere. The blocked person is not told.
- Blocking hides their group and private messages, their notifications and their “Ring”, and stops them from saving you to their contacts. So that a group can always find everyone, their SOS and their dot on the radar still show.
- Your phone still relays and stores their packets as usual, with the same limits, so after you unblock them (in Settings) you will see what they sent.
- “Report” opens your email app with a message to lienhe@trekmesh.app ready to send: the reported person’s name and ID, the reported message (if any) and the group’s name. The app itself sends nothing. If you send it, we receive what the email contains and your email address, and use them only to handle the report under the community rules. We can’t remove anything from other people’s phones, as there is no server.
9. Deleting your data
- Messages delete themselves after 24 hours.
- In the app: “Delete chat” removes your private messages with a person, unsent ones included; “Remove from contacts”; “Leave group” and then “Remove group” removes that group’s chat history, private messages and member list. Encrypted photos and files in the cache are not removed at once; they are replaced over time within the limits in section 5.
- Delete everything: uninstall TrekMesh, or go to Android Settings → Apps → TrekMesh → Storage → Clear data. This also deletes your name, ID and keys.
- We hold none of your data, so there is nothing to delete on our side. ML Kit data (section 6) is handled by Google under Google’s policies.
10. Children
TrekMesh is not directed at children under 13.
11. This website
The TrekMesh website is static: no cookies, no scripts, no trackers. The hosting provider may keep ordinary technical access logs (such as IP addresses). The group code in a join link comes after the #, so it is never sent to the server.
12. Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, we update this page and the effective date at the top.
